A couple of things to remember when you accessorize a room (not yourself):
1. Use things that you love! Don't worry so much about whether or not everything coordinates; feel free to use something that's unexpected (a splash of color).

2. Use dramatic and intense colors (citrus yellow, orange, red, purple, peacock blue) in small doses like a pillow, vase, or a candle. Don't overpower the room with these colors unless you use neutral tones everywhere else.
from Meet Mabel and Violet
The bright pink in this room brings an element of surprise to the light blue walls and blue and white furniture. However, it's only used on a small bolster pillow and a handkerchief (is that what that is?) on the dresser.
3. Group items in threes-- 3 candles, 3 books, 3 flowers...you get the idea. Apparently items in groups of threes is more pleasing to the eye. Another idea is also to have them in differing sizes: small, medium, and large.
